Abstract

English has been the prominent language spoken in the United States; however, with the rise of the Spanish language, it is imperative to address how Spanish speakers navigate spaces. Research has found mixed findings about the outcomes of serving as a language broker. This integrative systematic review aimed to identify and analyze literature on Latinx language brokers regarding cognitive strategies and abilities and the positive processes and perceptions that contribute to enhancing mental health. This review also sought to focus on factors that may contribute to resiliency over time for Latinx language brokers. A total of 31 studies were included in this review. Results highlighted three themes focusing on cognitive strategies and abilities, three themes related to positive perceptions and processes, and three themes regarding factors contributing to resiliency over time. Limitations and implications are identified and discussed, which are vital within the context of language brokering for the continued work with Latinx language brokers and families across settings.
