Abstract
“SuperSoft” for cello and percussion by Stefan Weisman Performed by William Castro (cello) and Marco Leong and Abby Gast (percussion)
Stefan Weisman's 2007 "SuperSoft," is a work for cello solo with percussion and explores time-suspension in a minimalist style. Performed very quietly, the pulsing vibraphone and ritualistic use of the crotales and break drum create a hypnotic backdrop for the cello part, composed in the highest range of the instrument. The composition is similar to Olivier Messiaen’s cello and piano duet movement, “Praise to the Eternity of Jesus” from his Quartet for the End of Time, as it conveys a sense of vastness and the ethereal.
