Abstract
Guatemalan Shelter Nurtures Optimism in Adolescent Women This study analyzes the risk factors associated with young women in Guatemala, the country with the highest incidence of teenage pregnancy in Latin America. We conducted the study at a women’s shelter in Huehuetenango, located in the northern highlands of Guatemala. Many of these young women came to the shelter for support because of abuse, pregnancy, or family problems. We assessed the status of health, education, and work opportunities for women between the ages of 13 and 19 through personal interviews. The results of this study showed that despite past traumas, the women felt optimistic about their educational and financial future.
