Abstract:
The purpose of this analysis is to determine the placement and impact of the transition within the moving image. The goal is to understand the narrative impact transitions hold, and then to diagnose what factors constitute the degree of impact. Film, unlike most forms of performance art, uses the transition for purposes other than strict practicality. By determining the structural pieces, their relationship to one another, and their relationship to the overall narrative, this analysis will seek to answer the question of why transitions are used in film, how the use of transitions impacts the narrative, and to what degree they influence the emotional connection formed with the audience.
