Abstract

Excerpts from The Magic Flute (in German)

Students of the 2015 Heidelberg Music Program

Two Blocks (30 minutes)

For students of the 2015 Heidelberg Summer Music Program, the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will play a major role. They will visit his birthplace in Salzburg and perform his music in capstone performances in Heidelberg and in the Austrian province of Carinthia. A particular focus will be Mozart’s opera, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). The roots of modern musical theater can clearly be traced back to Mozart’s comical German operas. The most noteworthy of these is The Magic Flute. Fans of the golden age of the Broadway musical can easily recognize in this Mozart opera, prototypes of the leading romantic pair and the more comical, down-to-earth sidekick-couple. The performances today will follow the highly-born Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina as they search for wisdom and truth. Their quest will be contrasted by the ‘everyman’ character of Papageno, the bird-catcher who wants only enough to eat and drink - and a girl to call his own, a Papagena.

Prince Tamino is on a quest to save Pamina, a princess in distress. Along the way, he learns much about truth, beauty and wisdom. To determine his worthiness as a future leader of the Brotherhood of the Sun, he must pass many tests. The last of these, the trials of fire and water, could cost him his life. Princess Pamina leads him on this perilous journey with the help of the magical instrument.

Papageno, the birdcatcher, has been thwarted at every turn in his search for an appropriate mate. At the end of his rope, almost literally, he is saved by The Three Spirits, who remind him to play his own magic instrument, the magic bells. When he does, his very own “Papagena” appears. Ecstatic, they rush away to start their own family of Papagenos and Papagenas.
